Our calendar was supposed to be based on the birth of Jesus. "BC" refers to dates "Before Christ" and "BCE" refers to "before the Common Era", with "AD" refering to years in the current numbering system. Unfortunately, they got it wrong. "In any case, whoever zeroed the calendar made an error, since the Bible says Jesus was alive in Herod's time, but Roman records showed that Herod died in what turns out to be 4 BC."
The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used one but it isn't the only one. For example, there's the Hebrew calendar based on lunar cycles. Today is 17 in Tamuz, 5762, as shown by this calculator.
Interestingly enough, the Islamic Calendar is also lunar based but with different month names and a different starting point. According to this calculator, today is 5 Raby` al-THaany 1422 A.H.
As if those weren't enough, here's a webpage full of calendar references and converters.
