We were containing Hussein. We had a watchful eye on him.
If he would have had all these WMD as purported, he would have used them by now.
Hell, he can hardly launch any major attacks against us except with his ground forces.
This is a moot point since, we are already attacking him, but I think an attack was justified. You even admit Saddam would use them if he had them, so for the security of the United States we need to be sure he does not get them or if he has them already, that he isn't able to make use of them. Saddam has a long history of evading the UN inspectors. He also has a history of using WMD. Add to that his harboring of terrorists in Iraq, the possible terrorist training camps. The terror unleashed upon his own people, then we are justified.
Now, I think the Liberation aspect of this war was an add on. Perspective put it very well when he said it was Icing on the cake.
Nobody screamed when we liberated women and girls from the Taliban in Afghanistan. There was a liberation campaign going on there as well, and it was even in the papers if you'll remember. Liberation was not the main objective, but was a nice byproduct. The same goes for Iraq. Afghanis still have a long way to go but hopefully we've given them a nudge in the right direction.
If after all this is done and the Baathist party is suffering the same fate as the Taliban inAfghanistan, and the Iraqi people do not choose democracy, then I think we need to let them have their way, but keep a watchful eye. If the new regime proves to be a hornet's nest of terrorist activity as well, then something more will have to be done. I won't speculate on answers to that since it is a fictional future and I lost my crystal ball years ago.
I think we are as justified in our actions in Iraq as we were in Afghanistan. I hope this ends quickly and that the Iraqis hang the Baath party from the lampposts.
