...and see if you can't get that knot out of your knickers.
I can't answer the question I previously asked, because I don't know who you are, just as you likely do not know Barnett.
A number of people in here have been gazing furiously into their crystal balls and making all manner of dire prediction...and they are free to do so, of course. They may even turn out to be right, by the luck of the draw if not insight.
Others are taking a more realistic stance...namely, we'll see what we see.
Clutching to an old order because "it's always worked*" and ignoring the fact that change is the only constant is foolish.
The defining event in the lives of both my parents was WW2, and my love and respect for them has made it difficult for me to acknowledge that the world they helped build is crumbling around us as the effects of the largest war in history fade. Notions of international security which arose in the wake of that war are slowly but surely being proven false.
One major reason, imo, for the west's ascendancy is that we embrace change. while the Arab and Persian world has done quite the opposite. A culture cannot coast forever on its invention of algebra.
In any case, if we don't strive to understand and work within the ever-changing international paradigm, we've lose the edge we've struggled so hard to establish.
If that sounds like "us against them," it is. It's a result of both human nature and the unfortunate rise of the nation-state. But we are where we are...though that will inevitably change someday as well.
As for where this war will lead us, who knows? I returned my crystal ball long ago when I discovered the darn thing didn't work.
*a highly suspect assertion in any case.
