...would you welcome a "shoot first, ask questions later" approach as a policy of the occupying army, enforced by people with no knowledge of your language, and no written signs posted that gave directions in your language? Would this inspire trust and good will in you toward the occupying army?
I thought not.
Would you feel safer if the occupying army found better ways to inform real refugees like yourself of expected modes of behavior?
I thought so.
If you were a soldier in the occupying army, would you welcome better procedures to allow you one more tool to cull the genuine refugees from the guerillas, thereby preventing you from blowing up trucks with 5-year-olds in them?
If you were part of a military medical unit, would you expect more or fewer incidents of emotional problems related to combat with the reduction in the number of children killed by your side?
REB's right. I don't understand. Why is it OK -- expected, even -- to accept this without comment, question, or attempt at amelioration?
I'm not calling for the heads, or any other body parts, of the soldiers involved. But I sure don't think this should be accepted as the proper way to do business if there is any way to avoid this kind of event. But if we just keep saying "Oops! -- that's the way it is!" then that is the way it will be.
