Everything should be run privately that can. I question the need for the US postal service now.
Looking at education you can see that if only parents paid for shcool it would be a huge financial burden. It is public because it is crucial to our democracy and our economic system. As such, it is subsidized (100% in this case) in order to assure that there is as close as we can make it to equal opportunity. The availability of a college education is now one of the major barriers to equality of opportunity in America. I'm not for quota's or reparations, but I do believe in equality of opportunity.
PBS really is matched by many cable learning channels, but not everyone has access to cable. If they did we could probably do away with it. How many people has PBS helped to read or develop educational interests? Sesame street is a good example of teaching pre-reading and reading skills. Are there programs as good on cable TV. I listen to NPR because it is the only radio station with a heavy emphasis on news. If there was money to be made with such detailed radio coverage why isn't there a commercial station like that? Did NPR wipe out any commercial news stations when it started?
Roads are another example. Would you prefer all interstates were toll roads?
Defense: How could we make that private?

Mark
