<Private roads + trucks = passing on the toll cost to the purchasers of the item being transported
How is this is different than them passing on all the other costs like gasoline taxes?
Private roads + private cars = reduced tourism
Didn't seem to reduce the traffic I encountered driving on the toll roads around Chicago. I had a lot of company.
Private roads + income generated from traffic for repairs + safety concerns = widely varying quality of roads and accessibility to regions, even by emergency vehicles, due to quality issues
Not all roads would be toll roads. If toll roads were more widespead, it wouldn't surprise me if some of the toll money would be used to subsidize public roads in less populated areas. This is already the norm for phone and electric service. City dwellers pay higher prices in part to subsidize the higher costs for rural areas.
Private roads + employees in private cars = increased business costs + less mobility among job seekers
Or, if people saw the full cost of driving, they might be more willing to consider mass transit or car pooling.
Private roads + traffic = long lines of people stopping to pay the tolls
Actually, technology is reducing this as a problem. Some toll roads already use an automated billing system where drivers don't even have to stop. They have a device installed in their cars and their vehicle ID is recorded automatically. They then get billed each month. I've read this system entered operation back east a few years ago. Odds are it's an idea that will spread quickly. It's faster for the drivers and much cheaper for the toll road operators with a lot less opportunity for theft.
There are all kinds of reasons we don't have more toll roads.
I suspect a lot of the resistance to toll roads is that people somehow think public roads are free. There are a lot of hidden costs with public highways, too. Here in Colorado, we pay 40.4 cents per gallon for gasoline tax (combined federal and state). Despite all that, it never seems to be enough when the state and federal legislature allocate highway funds. At least with toll roads, there's a better opportunity for the money to be spent where it was collected. Government is very inefficient due to large bureaucratic overhead.
Was your wife's school Catholic? If it was, you can write off the cost of payroll right there. It's easy to get inexpensive schooling if you don't have to pay the professionals.
No, my wife didn't go to Catholic schools. Unlike the vast majority of Filipinos, her family isn't Catholic.
