Private roads throughout our country's history = one hell of a lot healthier and numerous rail and mass transit systems.

Most railroads had to cough up for their own roads. Cars didn't. Cars won. From the standpoint of the average environmentalist, this is a bad thing.

There are hidden costs to subsidies as well.
