Current Events » in reply to Funny how that happens: you expand NATO and make your sponsorship of the new members contingent upon them supporting the war. LOL

Clever. Most unfortunately...

The list of 19 NATO nations I used for the "almost two-thirds" statement, and the dates they joined for more recent members:

Belgium
Canada
Czech Republic (1999)
Denmark
France
Germany (1955)
Greece (1952)
Hungary (1999)
Iceland
Italy
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Norway
Poland (1999)
Portugal
Spain (1982)
Turkey (1952)
United Kingdom
United States

Now:

Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia have been invited to join NATO as well (they aren't members yet), and you might then make a case that they were "bribed," since all of them (except, I think, Slovenia) are Coalition members. But if they were members, then, you see, instead of saying "almost two-thirds" of NATO were Coalition members, I would have used "70 percent."

NATO has one advantage the U.N. does not: it restricts membership to nations that, as the Treaty puts it,are "founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law."
