Where the line is drawn

To use an example more extreme than anyone or anything at the prison, what if I had someone in custody who knew where a nuclear weapon was somewhere in New York?

If it were up to me, and it would save the city, that person would end up with some serious damage if that's what it took to make him talk.

Score at the end: I wind up as a piece of shit with low morals and a disgrace to humanity. And a couple of hundred thousand people aren't going to get nuked. I could live with that tradeoff.

Now, if the guy you are dealing with knows who's making the bombs that killed a dozen Marines or a couple of hundred worshippers in a holy city, the decision isn't as clear, at least from where I'm sitting comfortably. But maybe a soldier guarding someone, a soldier who has picked up pieces of his dead buddies, might not think so, particularly if the methods involve no real physical damage.

The point is who these prisoners were IS relevant to the discussion.

Never justify unjust or unpleasant treatment of people you despise. Don't forgive them either.

Pity them, and hunt them down ceaselessly, but never descend to their level.

Would be interested in how one ceaselessly hunts down people pleasantly.
