A big difference

MPL had the possibility of succeeding. Beagle 2 had no chance whatsoever. Its failure is rooted not in an individual's mistake, but rather in the whole concept. The science package was overstated and not well matched to the financial resources available to support the mission. In fact, Mr. Pillinger never did raise the funds necessary to operate the mission and a huge debt remains. In some respects, he may be lucky the mission tanked and didn't dig it even further into debt.
