Rich you are getting into legally dangerous territory, Slander ...

Ignoring your slander FOR A MOMENT, NO ONE WOULD DO THE RESEARCH FOR A PRIZE, YOU MORON!!

Its simple economics you twit... small companies and research groups simply cannot afford the 100's of thousands in startup costs - we pay them to do a job for us, ie develop new technology for us- it also will have spin-offs that will benifit society in general- in fact one such spin off has already found use, (which by the way is how most of the tech you use got its start)... Large companies don't feel it is profitable, SO YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET!

There are not many people that are familiar with this technology and the application we use it for so OF COURSE it makes sense for the experts to evaluate the research proposals, what would you suggest? Some semi-moronic beancounter with a law degree?! THAT would be a sure way to waste money...

Quite frankly the panel that did the review consisted of nearly all the people in the world that knew enough to reasonably evaluate the proposals... Believe it or not, Rich, some things require an education and study before they can be evaluated...

The decision making process was very impartial- the ONLY criterion we went by was what was the best investment for advancing the area of laser technology we were interested in... Maximum return for minimum investment... For you to slander my (and my employers)professional ethics is criminal... AND I DO MEAN CRIMINAL!

Be VERY careful asshole!

Google has absolutely NOTHING in common with the process, that you think it is in ANY way comparable just demonstrates how little you understand! NO ONE would do this stuff just hoping for a 'prize', but it is something that needs to be done and will greatly benifit many other areas...

you need to learn that some things worth doing need funding- so far you seem too stupid to see that!
