Britain's civil war was about....

2 centuries before our first real election
:-D

That could be a valid point - we were unexpectedly successful in finishing major combat.
didn't necessarily have the people in place at the the right time.
I think though, that the people we did put in place were not necessarily in the right places....
We also did have time to plan.
Somewhere in the spectrum of your "plans go awry in war" and my "they're incompetent" lies the truth. :-)

The only pro-war predictions I (maybe selectively) recollect were very rosy indeed, some even mentioning roses.
The only serious* anti-war predictions I paid attention to were the "we're going to breed a whole new bunch of terrorists" has pretty much panned out as anticipated. I also thought the stakes for tri-partite civil war were much higher than they currently seem to be.

*Non-serious scenarios included:
Bogged down and effectively countered by Iraqi army.
Blood-for-oil.
Viet Nam 2.
Use of WMD.
