Trust me

You won't learn anything useful about families from my grandparents. They were farmers from N. Dakota (transplanted to SoCal) and they were demonstrably cruel to their children. Some of the punishments my father endured (for minor offenses) are creepy. Made him spend 24 hours on the roof of a barn once, for instance. They spent pretty much every waking minute when they were together bickering loudly. Grandma encouraged sexual abuse among some of her grandkids.

Chose a "garbage child" from among the grandkids. ("garbage child" is the opposite of a "pet" - everything the particular child does is subject to cricism and ridicule).

There are unfortunate echos of my grandparents that I detect all the way to my daughter.

Believe me: the good old days that reactionaries like to go on about, were not really that good.
