Supposably the mine tailings are an issue

Again I know next to nothing about this. However it is my understanding the rock containing the shale oil has to be heated in a retort. The rock itself expands like popcorn after the hydrocarbon has been expanded. Getting rid of this rock popcorn tailings is the big problem. Supposably there are still mountains of this stuff somewhere in England where the technology was pioneered in the 19th century and then abandoned. Again I'm speaking from ignorance.
