Yeah, but it makes a better story to claim this as no different than mega-crosses on public memorials slapped over an asortment of Animist, Athiest, Agnostic, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim americans. How else can the Christianutz feel persecuted?
The key here is that Christians expect to be treated as an enshrined religion, whereas our constitution strictly prohibits that. Due to their expectations of special treatment, they wrongly feel that the constitutional, lawful procedure of challenging state enshrinement/establishment is somehow persecution.
I grew up athiest in a bible belt town. I grew up fighting serious, potentially lethal, violence from the children of preachers and other town faithful directed at me, constant antagonism directed at me from the school administration and teachers, and blatant discrimination.
Its difficult for me to not guffaw when I hear christians whining on and on about how persecuted they are in America. I have seen few faiths as good at persecution of others and intolerance as Christianity. They have a distinguished history of it going back over a thousand years!
People have a basic right to believe whatever idiocy they wish to believe. They can even proselytize their fairy tale to me (peacefully and legally). They can even seek protection from the state, and state taxation for their crap-du-jour. I will fight for their rights in all of these things.
But no Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or whatever can have my tax money to advertise, support, enforce, mandate or demonstrate their faith above any other, in any context. Its written this way in the constitution, its basic human fairness, and it keeps america from ending up like that un-named small bible-belt town.
I've seen that world first-hand, and unless you are the lion, it aint fun
