A memorial to Christian veterans. We have no other kind.

To atheists, it's not a landmark: it's an insult. To everyone else who's not a Christian, too, and to some who are. Some just choose to ignore it. That the fight has lasted 16 years is enough to point out that there are some people in the community who don't want it there, who don't want to have to pay for the upkeep on what is a religious symbol that purports to stand for all the veterans of the community.

Another way to solve the problem would have been to put up huge monuments featuring symbols of the other major religions, plus one that symbolizes atheism, but that would be gaudy. Or maybe erect some large monument that can represent veterans in general, and not just Christian ones.

Perhaps some wealthy Christian group can adopt it and move it to some other, equally visible, but private area where they can insure, clean and restore it as it becomes hazardous, dirty and damaged.

I would think that someone who wants to reduce government spending on fripperies would appreciate the effort to eliminate a monument to only one part of the public that costs taxpayer money to maintain. Sure, it will cost some to take down, but think of the savings over time!
