I doubt if the audiences for "Magnificent Desolation" will improve. The surface of the Moon is just not all that pretty or interesting - "Grey Desolation" would probably be a better title.

But seeing the sights is not the reason for returning to the Moon. The only reason for returning to the Moon right now is CAPS. Its not an adventure, its a job.

I can't see where paying for 6 or 7 heavy lift launches to build something you then have to throw out makes any sense. I can't see the residents of Palm Beach or Miami or Fort Lauderdale wanting NASA trying to launch large nuclear reactors over their homes and beaches. Using solar thermal propulsion with Aldrin cycler type orbits will make a whole lot of difference in travel times. The radiation on Mars still remains a showstopper to any large development there.
