on a trip to and from Mars is the major issue and you argued that was the show stopper.

Aldrin Cyclers take a little over 2.5 years to complete a cycle and an astronaut would have to wait for the cycler to pass by again to return to the Earth.

A manned trip to Mars can be done in about 3 to 9 months depending on the engines and fuels used and the orbit. 6 months is a good average to work with. The surface of Mars and it's atmosphere help protect the surface dweller and the crew can add regolith to the Hab's roof to reduce exposer or live under a rock outcrop or in a cave. We would be talking an complete trip in the time frame of one Aldrin Cycler trip not including the surface stay.
