What does it tell you that fifteen states find it necessary to set a minimum wage higher than the Federal standard?
It tells me that, like Federal politicians, state politicians find cranking up the minimum wage to be an ideal way to endear themselves to voters at no cost to the treasury, whether or not is really does anyone any good.
A tiny fraction of hourly workers work for minimum wage or less, and of those only a fraction are raising families on it. Like so many other Great Liberal Causes, this is primarily a political tool built on the mythology of a huge lower class relying on the minimum wage to survive.
As far as your figures on border control go, you're pulling them out of your ass. Trillions?
The border fence in Israel runs about six million dollars a mile. 2400 miles of border would cost about $14 billion. It's estimated that illegal immigrants cost the nation about $10 billion a year, after the taxes they pay are factored out. You do the math. The obstacle isn't financial, it's political.
Somehow, I don't think raising our wages even higher relative to those in Mexico is going to stem the flow.
