Legal vs illegal

Seeing as how my wife, both of my stepsons, my daughter-in-law, and a good percentage of my friends are all immigrants, it'd be hard to say that I'm anti-immigrant. The difference, and it's substancial, is that all of those people I listed immigrated to America legally. They applied and went through the process. In fact, most of them have become naturalized citizens. I'm a big advocate of legal immigration because of the vitality they bring to our country.

According to some estimates, a million or more people immigrate to America illegally each year. Unlike Australia, most of them don't have to take a long boat ride to get here - they simply walk across the border. If this number is even close to the truth, it causes some problems that we have to address. First, such porous borders allow for all sorts of illegal activity such as immigrant smuggling, drug smuggling, and possible entrance for terrorists.

Even a country the size and wealth of American will have a hard time sustaining such a high illegal immigration rate. In addition to the employment issues, it also puts severe strain on other aspects such as school systems, medical care, crime rates, and poverty programs. It isn't unreasonable for America to expect that the people who come here obey our laws, starting with how they get here in the first place.
