We had this problem in Australia...

...you know, "boat people".

Some of it started with the fall of Vietnam, and we welcomed those Indo-Chinese to Australia and they now contribute magnificently to our cultural diversity and national wealth (not to mention some fantastic restaurants).

Over the years, attitudes changed. The last decade or so we got harsher and harsher. There were some popularist anti-immigration politicians getting votes. To exclude them, our "Liberal" party adopted their tactics, and our socialist party abandoned their social obligations and acquiesced.

"For evil to succeed, all that is required is that good men do nothing"

Our good men did nothing, so we stopped calling the immigrants "boat people" because we didn't want to acknowledge that they were human beings.

We stopped calling them "refugees" because we didn't want to acknowledge that they were escaping unpleasant regimes and wars back home and looking for a safe refuge.

We tried "economic migrants", but that sounded too pally and suggested they were useful to the economy.

So we started calling them "(suspected) illegal immigrants" .

"ILLEGALS!" for short.

Nobody likes an illegal! They're nasty and dirty and trying to steal our jobs. They might want to live next door to us and date our daughters! They want to take our county over by stealth. They will out-breed us. Why should we let them have a share of our comfortable lifestyle. If they want it, they can build it for themselves, back where they come from!

So we started locking them up in "immigration detention centres" - Concentration camps, in the old lingo - (pre-WWII when the Nazis did some unspeakable things in the camps and ruined the nice name that the Brits had used in the Boer war for rounding up suspect nationals and incarcerating them).

Since the appeal process for migration and refugee status was so drawn out, we declared them detainees till the process was finished. For many this amounted to indefinite detention without trial.

Then some Australians objected. They protested and demonstrated outside the prisons, so we moved all the prisons out into the middle of the desert, miles from anywhere. This had numerous advantages - "out of sight = out of mind" and those who wanted to visit had to waste a day or two each way on the journey. That cut down on the amount of pro bono lawyers no end! 3 days travel for a 1-hour visit doesn't stack-up!

But still it wasn't enough. Boats kept coming and these damn illegals kept landing. For some strange reason, the free market across Asia enabled unscrupulous people to charge money to rent out leaky old boats to illegals and they were crewed by poor locals who needed the money. These leaky boats sometimes sank, but they only needed to make one voyage to succeed. Indeed, for the entrepreneurs, they succeded as sson as the boat sailed, whether it sank or not.

Hundreds drowned.

We seized and burned all the boats that landed, but they were not expected to return anyway. We tried towing the boats back to the edge of Indonesian territorial waters, but the Indonesians complained, and the boats headed back to Australia anyway. Some people made 3 or 4 attemps before they finally arrived.

Our defence attempts forced the illegals to land in remote stretches of territory and trek across the desert. Many dozens died of thirst.

They landed at remote Australian islands, so our government declared that although those islands were Inalienable Australian Territory, that landing on them did not place you "in the migration zone of Australia". We similarly declared that airport lounges were not part of Australia, so anyone who arrived there could not claim refugee status and could be detained or shipped back as convenient.

International law is so useful, if you change a few definitions. It's like redefining torture as only those acts likely to cause deat or permanent mutilation. Agonising, unbearable, incessant pain doesn't count anymore, nore does filth, rape, sodomy, degradation or religious bastardry.

Our government announced that the illegals were sinking their own leaky boats and throwing their own children overboard when intercepted, so that we would have to rescue them.

There was a nasty incident when a Norwegian container ship picked up a boatload of illegals and brought them close to shore. A special act was passed in parliament, and the SAS raided the ship, detained the illegals and crew, and "stopped" an international incident where illegals might have been helped to land by a confused third-party.

it still wasn't working, so we found some small countries nearby that had poor economies. (sort of like Haiti). We bribed them to pass acts in their parliaments and establish Australian detention centres on their islands - "The Pacific Solution". That way, the illegals got rounded up at sea and dumped in camps in other countries. There was no way that they might be allowed in to Australia.

We even reached the point where we started deporting and detaining Australians who couldn't speak up for themselves.

We deported an Australian of Phillipine descent who had been in a car accident and was concussed.

We detained a mentally-ill Australian of German descent who was convinced "they" were out to get her and kept using false names.

In the camps, there is minimal medical support, especially for mental health. There are no facilities, almost no TV or games. The intention is to make the camps horrible places to be to persuade the illegals to take a bribe and go home, or go elsewhere. In these conditions, even the healthy and sane go unhinged. Suicide attempts and self-harm are common.

The guards are private contractors. It's cheaper that way - non-union rates, and no training costs, unlike real prison guards. The contractors thought it was great having a confused mentally-ill woman there. They used to watch her showering.

Some of the other illegal women were locked up in common cells and huts with dozens of men. When they complained of rape and assault, the guards beleived the men who said the women were prostitutes, and stirring things up to cause trouble.

All in all, it's been a great solution. Not quite Final, but it's acheived the aim of dehumanising the illegals, and many Australians who continue to do nothing.

For now, the boats have stopped coming. Maybe it has worked?

Funny thing is, some 60-70% of the illegals eventually passed muster as legl refugees. Australia still refused to take more than a handful of them. Most went to other countries that do still think of their fellow humans as human.

So sure, SDAI, of course I support your plans.

Maybe Guantanamo Bay has room for all the illegals you want to intercept, detain, and deport.

If not, you can buy Haiti, or invade Grenada again...
