I've avoided commenting on this thread for awhile. I sort of wanted to see how it would evolve before putting in a dissertation. ;-)
Science and spirit are not disparate concepts. As science progresses it will enable the identification of lots of signals it cannot at this time detect or identify. Every moment we live in a field of innumerable signals, fields, etcetera. We generate our own subset signals as we interface with our environment
Re:Spirits.
I have no doubts that REB's son was talking to his grandma or more properly, her consciousness. The universe is filled with spectra that adjoin the material one and which oscillate alongside it. The physical body is just one shell for consciousness. Consciousness as a quantized field of energy is just as real.
Material manipulation is not hard to do either from other spectra, provided you have a strong enough signal lock. 'Overshadowing' another is also done by many spirits. We are all overshadowed to one degree or another at various times. Most do not realize that consciousness and our thought processes are subject to direct external influence.
Children are more receptive to disincarnate entities. Countless numbers of imaginary friends are not as imaginary as one might believe. They are the result of people communicating with children and manipulating their thought processes to facilitate their own presence. Some imaginary friends are just that - imaginary - and are the work of the child's conscious or subconscious mind.
Like a world concealed behind a two way mirror, we are observed by other spectra while our eyes cannot distinguish non-atomic configurations reflecting light within a certain bandwidth and we can only see our own reflections.
If REB's grandmother was very religious she might try to convert him, even after she died.
Many folks find themselves in a limbo state after they die. They wander around and their thoughts guide them instantaneously to that with which they are thinking. It's all frequency relationship. The thought of a loved one resonates at a certain frequency. If REBs grandma thinks about her grandchild - she can be right there beside him. If she wants to knock down a picture of her son, she can do that too if she focuses enough energy on it.
That creeps some folks out. Yet for these disincarnate spirits, they are NOT in the material world and no longer have physical eyes, but are manipulating their directions and activities solely from consciousness. So the things they 'see' are those things which they have frequency relationship with. Many of REB's furnishings and books would probably be safe from any phenomenon because they would be 'invisible' to REBs grandma. She would be limited in her travels to familiar places and things she can think about.
The recently departed usually loiter around their own houses and those of their relatives/friends for awhile before they encounter someone who can guide them. These 'guides' would appear as angels because they oscillate in a range which makes them appear as though they are bathed in light and because their intelligence, wisdom and compassion seem quite inhuman. These guides can put them in touch with other departed relatives or friends and explain to them, within their ability to understand, what has happened to them, where they are and the lay of the land, so to speak.
Some folks know their way around these other spectra, and know that there is far more than just 'heaven', but that their are societies and cultures that live and work and learn in adjoining spectra that we cannot conceive of. There are whole worlds that exist only in a state of energy which would seem invisible and intangible to us, but which would be the homes of these lighted beings.
Moses, Mohammed, Jesus, Zoroaster, Buddha, Isis and countless historical figures have had visits to these type of places and their writings and descritpions were the best they could muster. The concept of angels and gods is merely one of interpretation and perception.
To the wandering wild man born alone in the jungle and who suddenly finds himself in a city where the police help him acquire food, clothing, shelter and who work for the local government - the wild man knows not of the normalcy of these things and were he to go back to the wild, he would give descriptions of the sights he saw, the kind & helpful folks and marvels of technology whose purpose he couldn't fathom. He would be listened too by other wild men and legends would be born of the place where food is abundant, tasty and shelter exists immune to the wind and the sun. The policeman would become a 'angel' and his superior must be some all-powerful 'god'.
As time would pass, the legend would grow as well as the lure of how one could get to this legendary or 'holy' place. After the first wild man died, eventually some wild men who had heard parts or most of his experiences would become holders of the legend and would answer questions and disperse and reitierate the story the best they could. Not having experienced it, their tales would naturally be embellished with their own interpretations. A religion would be born.
And like all religions, there would exist tiny kernals of truth underneath the stories and writings no matter how badly they had been distorted.
That's the way it is with Christianity. There are countless heavens and hells and beings that seem to be godlike in their abilities, knowledge and mindset. One beings hell is another's heaven. It's all consciousness and the relationships formed with conceptualizations.
For some merely living in a body of flesh - like an animal - is torturous. To be imprisoned in an expression that is so impossibly finite, so limited in ability and confined in consciousness to one thought at a time would be as if someone asked us to live as an ant, gather food and 'think' only of these type of things.
Religions serve a purpose. They open up the door to non-material thinking. They may have all the facts and details wrong, but they keep people's minds open to a life beyond the physical. They introduce a code of ethics, inspire some manner of morality and introduce the idea that actions can be good and evil and carry repercussions.
Almost everyone must go thorugh these stages of religious thinking and belief.
It's all about the quality and content of the information you have available.
If someone wants to know about the internet, it helps if you talk about it with someone who has been on the internet more than one time - or merely watched another over their shoulder.
Each topic or thing comes with an infinitely greater amount of detail available.
Death and birth are interchangeable. When you are born you 'die' somewhere else and vice-versa. After a certain amount of 'traveling' you get to know your way around and can retain this knowledge between the transitions.
You also begin to see the greater purpose of eternal learning and of becoming more infinite in nature. You cease to grieve for the dead or to fear death, because such no longer makes sense. One also sees the absolute necessity of each person coming to these relavations on their own and on their own terms.
Forcing others to hold any belief is destructive to that belief. Interfering with others natural growth and development is detrimental to one's own.
Everyone needs to find their own way around. Science, like philosophy, is a tool which can lead to greater understanding of the universe and our place within it.
