McCarthyism v. Bushism

On the surface it's a valid comparison. Both Bush and McCarthy deem anyone opposed to their demogogery as unpatriotic and supportive of the forces of evil. Both of them try to shut up the opposition.

An important distinction, however, and one which raises Bush up to a far more dangerous level is that Bush CAN

imprison people without charge, without representation, without end.

And imprison anyone who complains about any particular secret imprisonment.

That's amazing in a country which once prided itself on it's Constitutional protections.

Bush is spying on the domestic population, secretly. Tell me that Bush has any compunctions against using the results of his domestic spying on this unprecedented scale for neocon political advantage. (Tell me that Bush has any compunctions.)

Bush, as opposed to McCarthy, CAN and has ordered people be tortured. Bush has secret prisons in Europe, Bush has Guantanamo, Bush has exported people to Egypt for torture. Normally, if one orders something done one is as guilty as the direct perpetrator.

So, Bush can and does follow the same extreme practices as other demogogues. That he's not where Hitler was, yet, is not his fault. They're trying.

And, Russian dictators after Stalin had to answer to the Politburo. Which could, and did, replace them. Bush's pressure on the Republican controlled Congress is an attempt to preempt their roles and fold them into the White House. When that's done it IS a dictatorship.

Which will be "legitimized" by Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito and one other.
