Why not just say that it resembles the US during the McCarthy era? Isn't that bad enough?
Probably a lot like you referring to a prolonged harsh and even brutal occupation, as a 'Genocide'.
Other terms you could benefit from learning about, are 'accuracy' and 'nuance'.
