One of our seminal legends, that of King Arthur, has maintained that right makes might for over a thousand years.
Actually, if you go by T. H. White, is was "Might for Right," which is light-years of difference, isn't it? Of course, if you read the books, it gets a lot more complicated than that.
Suffice it to say that neither Arthur or Robin Hood used examples of charitable works or peaceful negotiation to acheive most of their ends.
You and Robert can keep going along the same line of thinking if you want, but if you boil it all down it still comes to "if we're NICE to the monsters, they won't be monsters any more. And anyway, it's our fault they're monsters in the first place."
I'm not sure this is a gap that can be leaped, but I do know that I don't want that philosophy in charge of our foreign policy under the current circumstances.
Keep in mind that 9/11 was being planned before Bush was ever elected, and what a thin justification was given for it.
