A couple of points you might enjoy about the cigar heyday: Tampa was the first place in the United States where men and women enjoyed equal pay for equal work, the typical Tampan earned $ 1. per day, cigar workers averaged $ 5. per day. I am searching back in memory, but the Cuban population had one of the first comprehensive medical programs in the nation for their workers in a facility called Centralato Austrilato (?) (I am going to have to look this name up, the building is still there and undergoing restoration) the typical Tampan was some 27 per cent literate, the cigar people 99 per cent, the workers came to Tampa both from Key West and New Orleans, the ethnic breakdown was about 2/3 Cuban, 1/3 Italian. Almost all were Roman Catholic, which was another scary element to the native Tampans. Those shotgun residences were one of the first "Levit towns" in the US and were advertised in the NY papers for $ 750.
The history of Tampa and the cigar industry and the people involved is both rich and charming. And, it enriched the area culture and brought Tampa a legacy of having the best food in Florida.
