Bless you, Publius. We had socialized medicine, by subscription, full coverage, for about $6 a month as late as the early '60s. There was El Centro Asturiano hospital and La ClÃnica Trelles. They were sponsored by non-profit social clubs which provided entertainment, libraries, ballrooms, dances, theaters, all for prices which any working family could afford. It was an idea inspired by Cuba and Spain's long-time Anarchist tradition. Ybor City had sidewalks way before downtown Tampa got them. As Ferdy Pacheco once said, "they didn't do when they were mining coal in Pennsylvania, or hunting whales in New England", but they had it Tampa. It all died when the cigar-making machines were introduced; any dumb Cracker could make a thousand cigars in an hour.
