Bread

The best bread I ever tasted came from a stone oven in a town square in Kaslo, British Columbia. We were camping (well, trailering) on Kootenay Lake and would cruise up to Kaslo on Sundays, when the bread was baked. You had to bring your own container, but for two bucks you got a huge round loaf of sourdough bread hot from the oven. The old guy that baked it siad the secret was the starter, which had to be kept in a particular cave in an undisclosed location. The bread was aromatic, full of flavour, and a meal in itself. The crust was thick and just right when fresh, but if you let it get more than a day or so old, you might as well use the loaf as a cannonball.

If you are ever visiting that part of the world, Kaslo is a very cool town, it must be one of the smallest to have it's own symphony orchestra, theatre troupe, and opera. New York would have to have at least 30,000 art galleries to have the same number per capita as Kaslo. Lots of ex- (and current) hippies, many of them Vietnam War dodgers. Ainsworth Hotsprings is a must-do nearby, with it's horseshoe cave full of steaming mineral water. The main pool is about 40 C (104 F), while the adjacent waterfall/cold pool is 3 C (37 F) - brisk!
