re: "the rest of the FarLeft crowd"...

That would include me.

And I recognize your irony in posting the question: a question framed by The Rabid Right in a way to make any answer other than a knee-jerk parroting of the Bush agenda suspect at best... dangerous and *gasp* unpatriotic at worst.

Oh, excuse me: the worst, as we have belabored before, and to no good end, is "treason".

How well I recall a post by gbaikie from the late winter/early spring of 2003, which (in his private fractured version of the English language) claimed:

"The War on Terrorism is winning."

He was correct then, and he still is. The War is winning. Not our side, not the other side, but the War itself. Both sides benefit from its perpetuation. On our side, the continuance of "wartime" (as in "wartime Presidency") is a stick with which the Bush Admin and its hopeful successors flog us into accepting diminution of our liberties. On the other side, it is a recruiting tool.

DFM, by posting that inclusive list of general acts of terrorism snce 1980, opened this discussion to non-"Islamist" terror -- so let us examine the success of Her Majesty's Government against the IRA and Provos. Keep in mind that, technically, that particular war on terror was fought on their own soil, without the costs and delays of mobilizing an invasion force.

The Good Friday Accords? After how many decades of ineffective war on the streets, the first hope was a negotiated settlement.

But as we know, the Irish are the native speakers of Ironics.
