Off Topic » in reply to Numbers. Again.

The Romans were not religious fanatics.

They were politically astute empire-builders who understood that treating people with equal dignity made their domination of said people impossible. They were aided and abetted by Jewish authorities who likewise didn't want to see their own authority questioned.

The whole Sermon on the Mount is seriously radical social philosophy.

It makes no sense to condemn the millions for the acts of the hundreds, or even of the thousands. When someone suggests that Muslims are by definition violent and we therefore have the right to persecute and kill them, we are the ones who sound like the fanatics, and act like them too. Suppose we make exceptions for forced conversions. Can you say "Spanish Inquisition"?

If you want to measure human behavior by numbers, I leave you to it. Maybe I can dig up the historical analyses from the early 1970s declaring, based on the numbers, that slavery wasn't that bad.
