re: Some additional thoughts

What would you consider "solid" evidence at this point? Do some of your own research on this. Start in England and Europe. Move on to Africa, with special attention to nations like Algeria.

A certain point of view in this issue has invested a lot in the belief that "terrorism" is an issue involving a few random aberrant individuals, largely unrelated to any overall organized cause or ideology. This is the "let's treat it as a criminal issue" thesis. We caught, tried, and convicted those who bombed the WTC. Oddly, it was destroyed anyway. Somehow I suspect that radical Islam would not have vanished with the capture of Osama bin Laden, either.

The idea that maybe we are dealing with a larger problem is resisted with some intensity. I have no idea what level of proof you would require to believe that there is a worldwide, well-financed, organized effort on the part of the radical wing of a major religion to spread its poisonous ideas to millions of people. Not just in Western nations, but Muslim nations that have not been known for radical beliefs in past years. So successful has this been that, if places like Turkey and Egypt actually held truly free elections, I'm not sure we would like the outcome.

As for our politicians treating the matter seriously, get real. We can't even get the government to admit that it's more likely that a Middle Eastern non-citizen is more likely to bomb an airplane than a middle-aged Dutch lady in a wheelchair. Political correctness above all.
