Hi Martha,
I'm from the so called "Old Europe"...
And went to the Free University of Brussels where we learned about Critical thinking (and amazingly, I can't find anything in english about it).
So here it is:

Valeur laïque par excellence, le libre examen implique non seulement l’affirmation d’un droit, celui de l’absolue liberté de conscience, mais surtout l’affirmation d’un devoir : celui de ne reconnaître aucun dogme et de procéder avec esprit critique à la mise en question des idées reçues, toutes les idées reçues, y compris celles ancrées en soi, les plus pernicieuses, celles de la bonne conscience et du préjugé".

Secular value by excellence, free examination implies not only the assertion of the right to the absolute freedom of conscience, but especially the assertion of a duty: to not recognize any dogma and to proceed with critical mind to question the generally accepted ideas, all the generally accepted ideas, including those anchored in oneself, the most pernicious, those of the good conscience and of prejudice.
