The problem comes...
when certain people assume that just because its unidentified it must be the wildest most supernatural explanation to explain it. EVEN If someone spent millions hunting down that indeed some celebration released balloons, and that given the prevailing winds they would be able to be at that point in the sky and catch the suns rays- you would still see it touted by ufo nuts as hard proof....
Hell, the 'Phoenix lights' are still claimed as proof even though its been completely explained.... and some people still swear by Uri Geller.... The need to believe can lead people to act quite insane.
