I beg to differ, Martha. The role of the skeptic is not to avoid knowledge, it is to make the search for knowledge easier by making reasonable guesses to apply to situations where there is not enough data to know with any certainty. It is the same procedure a detective uses when he eliminates a suspect because he has a good alibi.
The detective knows that the suspect may have gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to set up a phony alibi, but it is now the detective's job to prove that. The suspect should not have the burden of proof placed on him. A cop just can't say "I'm sure he's faked it", and arrest him anyway).
When decisive information is not available, a reasonable and conventional explanation of the facts trumps the extraordinary one every time, otherwise we'd spend all our time and effort chasing shadows and being disappointed.
Besides, I never trusted Peggy Noonan.
