Thats exactly right- its your point of view. Scientifically, its impossible to define where a "human life" begins outside of fetal viability. Therefore, ascribing human life at any point short of fetal viability is an opinion (and, lets face it, more often than not an opinion shaped by religious belief). As long as it is personal opinion and not fact, and as long as we live in a free secular democracy, then you have simply no right to pass or insist upon a law outlawing abortion. Its really as simple as that. Government in a free state does not exist to enforce your personal moral sensibilities.
Suppose I was of the opinion that you should not be able to own property in excess of a value of $100,000 because I held it was immoral and unjust. Suppose I advocated for laws that would have most of your property siezed (if you own a home and a 401K and are over 30, chances are your assets exceed 100,000). Suppose my only justification for this were my beliefs? Exactly how would you react to me?
Then why do you all think you have the right, because of what you believe, to cram your poorly thought out moral dogma down my throat?
You don't.
And I chose communism for a reason. There is a direct allegory here. Communists piss and moan about 'The People'- but they have no real empathic subjective understanding of 'The People'. For a die-hard activist communist, 'The People' is just a convinient slogan. A political tool. As is 'The Unborn' for anti-abortionists.
Yeah, Yeah, I know. You were adopted. But there is a big difference beween you being killed, and you never existing in the first place. An act of killing is something that is clear and defined and not at all subjective. Preventing the maturation of a clump of cells that could someday be a person is not the same. Its a false moral equivalence. A convinient pretty banner to wave around to distract everyone from the real issues.
Besides, what you propose is a slippery slope in any case. If we accept your thesis that 'preventing birth' is murder, At what point is intervention criminal? Are Birth control measures that can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg on the womb murder? If so, there go many classes of birth control. Is preventing the fertilization of an egg in the presence of sperm Murder? If so, there go many more forms of birth control. Withdrawl?
Are we to treat erections as the antecedent of egg fertilizations, and thus having legel rights?
It gets real stupid (or I should say, even more stupid) real fast.
How many children have you adopted? Why are you not standing outside an abortion clinic offering women that you will adopt their child if they don't abort?
When we have even close to 100% adoption of unwanted children, then you have a practical point if not a legal, ethical or moral point. But we don't. Our system is drowning in unloved unwanted children. Why don't we pass some goddamn laws about them? Where the hell is the moral outrage about their</> lives.
Tell me, when the pro-life republican party held two houses of congress and the presidency, and all the votes needed for a constitutional amendment banning abortion, why didn't they do anything? Thats right. This isn't a real issue. This is a tool to stir up the zealots and the suckers to get their votes. If the right-wing ever banned abortion in America, it would be the end of the right wing.
No. The american anti-abortion movement is a pack of hypocrites, suckers and religious zealots that are a useful and vocal tool for arrogating to a moral highground that is a highground in opinion only.
Live by your own beliefs, and I will applaud you as a man of moral strength. Expect me to capitulate to your beliefs and I will call you a tyrant and a zealot.
