People who do things that are valuable for society but are unpaid have the opportunity to have inadequate health care, to reach old age (if they live that long) to be shunted off into institutions that smell of disinfectant where they don't dare have their own things because of thieves.
This culture doesn't reward the family structure. This culture only talks big.
In a culture that rewards "every man for himself", the person who volunteers takes an enormous risk. She has nothing of her own, and depends on the good will and good fortune of others. If that good will isn't forthcoming, or if that good fortune falls short even if the good will is there, it doesn't make the 10 O'Clock News. These days, someone might blog about it, one among millions. The person who doesn't look out for herself is extinguished not with a bang, but a whimper.
If that's not an assessment of an individual's worth by society, to suck a person dry and then throw her away because nothing else can be gotten out of her, I don't know what is.

*This* culture doesn't have another way to express it.
