Scandinavia does have a way to do things.

It's not the only way, but it is a way. They are doing something that works for them.

As opposed to us.

When I was a child, New York State, where I lived, had a big problem with refugees. From Alabama. Conditions for the poor there were intolerable. People would sell everything they owned and buy bus tickets to New York. They wanted to live in a place where they could get their kids into a decent public school, where they could go to a clinic if they didn't have the money for a private doctor, where they could get food aid if they needed it, where subsidized housing was available, where they could get jobs.

New York was not the only state that had this problem. The reason the Federal government got into the welfare business is because some communities' idea of how to deal with the poor is to offer them the alternatives of leaving or starving.

We have added child care and care of the elderly to our list of things we don't do.

We have big problems. Our response has been to tell women to go home and take care of their children, tell homemakers that it's their own damn fault they didn't start an independent IRA from their (nonexistent) earnings, put our fingers in our ears, and sing very loudly. Brain fart vs. brain constipation. Hmmm...
