re: Oops. Sorry.

A good deal of the change in moving away from grandparents taking on the role of childcare for working parents was caused by the demographic of our elderly having longer and healthier lives. The elderly are not so inclined during that period of time while their grandchildren are in need of care, to move into their homes for their own protection and nurturing. Instead they're moving about the country in motorhomes or banding together in active adult living communities.

My mother's parents were a big part of my childhood and I benefitted greatly from them. My parents, who had me and my little sister later in life, died long before my children were born but my wife's parents are still alive. They have been miserably absent in my children's lives because of not only the factors I listed above but also because they're somewhat shallow individuals, having come to the conclusion that they're done raising children and their elderly years are all about them.

I think you're dead on in indentifying the real underlying problem here that our technological and medical advances have created a society that is straining our natural family structure. It takes a strong committment these days to work around that.
