Fast rewind ... pause ... forward ... wait, go back!

"Did you catch that? A Columbia River Basalt eruption."

"No, I didn't"

"Well, at this speed it was just a series of flashes. Get as close as you can at this speed, then use the rate of change knob switch to a million years per second. Do the same thing and crank it down to a million years per minute...it takes a bit of practice. Good, now zoom towards earth center."

"What if I already know the date of the eruption?"

"From what, K-Ar dating? That'll narrow the search, sure, but the margin of error still means you have to keep narrowing it down. Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. Soon you'll be able to move the foward-back knob in coordination with the rate of change knob. You job is to place markers into the database so that others don't have to go through this process. They'll just click on the points you've established."

"And when I get down to the days scale, I record the spacial-temporal coordinates?"

"Well, we need it to hour scale. Then put in a marker. And make sure you are set to the Mantle Plume Coordinate system. Try to get as close as you can to the initial eruption, the maximum discharge, and the end. Log it, and move on to the next eruption."

"And when I am done with the Columbia River Basalts?"

"That'll keep you pretty busy till lunch. Then we'll capture some quick 10 million year videos of Fold Thrust Belt Mountains."
