That's a good observation Robert. I have always wondered what makes them so "staunch" in the face of REASON, and I think you have hit the nail on the head. I must admit, poor Tom has taken that stance and defended himself into a corner. I give him ten points for his fearlessness and another ten points for his never wavering. None of us can figure him out. We know he is a devoted father and husband and an indefatigable capitalist, but (sigh) this is Flame and we're all piling on.
So he comes across more like a character out of a novel, one we are trying to describe. (I know what I call him at Christmas).
Tom is Tom because he nevers wavers. You know exactly what he is going to say. And it's true, he could put his answers on auto-pilot, and no-one would know he had left for the high Sierras for 2 weeks.
