I raised a set of daughters where I spanked at times. I raised another much younger daughter years later and having decided that spanking was worthless I never laid a spank on her. Bottom line, not a lot of difference. They all turned out cpmparably well but the older daughters resent the younger just a little. :)
I also provide disipline for my son and grandsons. After a very difficult period in pre-school, the shock and awe of a spanking was very effective in teaching my youngest grandson that he is not in control and there is a world beyond time out.
Other than that unique success, the long range value of spanking is very questionable and I have abandoned it completely.
Probably doesn't make a lot of difference as long as we remember that punishment is about control and not inflicting pain. Abuse is abuse whether is is mental or physical.
