The site mentions the Druids worshipped the tree and then omits the most important part. A virgin was sacrificed on the tree and her blood was used to pacify their god and bring back warm weather. Since the evergreen was the only green tree in the bleak German winter it was the Druids perceived link to better weather. So, obviously, that was the tree to use for sacrifices, since god kept it green.
Then that practice ended and food and meats were put on the tree as offerings and strung there so that the meats fresh blood would pour down the tree.
Eventually the tree was brought inside the home, strung with garlands of sweet meats and underneath were other offerings to the Druids' god. The trees were decorated with silver and gold in an attempt to buy the pacification of an angry, bloodthirsty god.
The Christians moved in, adopted the native tree offerings, just as they adopted the Mithraism concept of virgin birth and the personal intercessor stuff from the Egyptians and half the rest of their beliefs, now placing gifts under the tree and still decorating it with garlands.
Even today, centuries later, we still often find the angel placed at the top of the tree. Little do most Christians know that they are symbolically impaling a screaming, protesting, doomed virgin on the tree each time they do so.
Yes, I know, posting this sort of stuff all too often breeds ill will and resentment. At the same time, it often wakes folks up to things they do robotically and without any thought. The latter outweighs the former in my judgment.
Besides, everytime I see folks bring their trees home from the local lot, I often still hear the screams of countless sacrificed young girls echoing through history in my mind.
Their screams are not lost on me and I post this, in part, on their behalf.
If you listen closely enough - you will hear them too.
It's a good way to keep oneself free of becoming just another modern pagan savage.
