I'm not sure I like the idea of smart guns.

In fact, I don't like the idea of any electrical circuitry in guns at all. Right now, they are robust and reliable, but still fail occasionally for one reason or another.

Firearms require only two technologies, mechanical and chemical, one for the mechanism, the other for the ammunition propellant. Adding any others simply makes the system more complex, and gives it more opportunities to fail. The only thing that is worse than a weapon that is used when it shouldn't be is one that fails to work when its supposed to.

I was a kid when I first read A.E. van Vogt's "The Weapon Shops of Isher". One of its ideas was of a ray gun that was telepathic, and would only work in the service of Good. Even as a kid I knew that was BS. The book's slogan, "The right to buy weapons is the right to be free" was clearly BS too. Even as a kid fascinated with guns I knew better than that. It's more about "buy" than it is about "free".

As for the snarkiness of conservatives, I wouldn't worry about it. They know they're in the minority and they know they're wrong. Even those who don't care about guns, are perhaps terrified of using them, or know nothing about them only jump on the NRA bandwagon because they feel compelled to support all Conservative dogma. They can't afford to meet us halfway on any issue lest their world view unravel completely. What really steams them is that the evil Libs have figured out another way of keeping them from making a buck.

You see it here on the Zone all the time. This is why folks like Bowser and myself who are knowledgeable about firearms and own and use them, even admire them, are such a threat to them. We don't fit their stereotype of the wimpy anti-gun pussy liberal. We are taunt-proof.

Or as they like to call it, "class traitors". 8)
