Ownership of the means of production.

Marxist jargon? Only if you weren't an owner.

When the means to make things are owned and controlled by others, your labor becomes a commodity totally out of your control. Working in a factory in the 19th century meant you did not own your tools, purchase your materials, teach your apprentices, learn your trade, own your shop, have the protection of a guild, or sell your product in an open, free market: all aspects of non-agricultural manual labor since the Middle Ages. All you had was your labor, and the conditions under which it was converted to wages were entirely out of your control.

Not only that, everything you needed to survive was only available from either your boss, other some other parasite just like him. You were forced off your land into the new cities because work was now the only way to survive. You rented a hovel, you bought factory made cloth to make your clothes, and of course you did not grow your own food or buy it from someone who did. You bought it and everything else from a merchant who controlled its source, quality and price. And of course, you spent half your life in the gentle conditions of some satanic mill.

Sure, pre-industrial society had poverty and even famine, but it was not deliberately engineered or gleefully exploited to keep labor costs down. Your capitalist paradise was a bloody nightmare except for the 1% that owned it and the 10% that helped administer it. Why did all Europe erupt into revolution in 1849; was it because of some anarchist rabble-rousers poisoning the minds of the newly-prosperous and pampered masses? How did the early anarchists and socialists get workers to defy Hoffmann's bayonets on the streets of Paris and build a Commune that required brutal military repression and vicious street fighting to break?

It wasn't prim maidens with hankies under their noses reading proletarian poetry, it was desperate people fighting for their lives and livelihoods and families. And in our own country, riots and labor unrest were widespread from after the Civil war well into the new century. And why did all those Europeans come to Ellis Island? Because in those days America had the most progressive government in the world! The huddled masses came here to get away from 19th century European capitalism; that's right, they came here because the USA was a liberal country, the most liberal country in the world.

I'm sure your ancestors suffered. Well, so did mine. If you want to whine your taxes are too high or implementing safety regulation is too dear, fine, but don't tell me how humanely your robber baron heroes ran their sweatshops.
