Modern prosperity is possible because education, social legislation and welfare policy, as well as unions and the law, made it possible for workers to create a labor market of their own, as well as the safety net which made it possible for them to make owners have to compete for workers. The free market helped the workers, but first they had to break the stranglehold the employers had over it. The whole modern conservative program is designed to put the brakes on this natural evolution and return, as much as possible, to a nineteenth century model of industrial serfdom.
How long do you think our comfy middle class jobs will last under the assault of automation, outsourcing, free trade, and all the other corporate technological and social maneuvers, as well as the legislative and judicial mechanisms which will implement and institutionalize them? Why do you think Pedro and Gupta are after our jobs? It ain't no liberal plot, Jack, its business.
