It's easier to drive one person around in a big car than it is to drive four people and their crap around in a two person car. Not everyone can afford more than one car.
My last kid is ready to go out on his own in a year or so, and if I didn't have the wheelchair requirement, I might be right there for something like a Chevy Volt in a couple of years.
Chevy has also come out with a big hybrid SUV, the Tahoe. We'll see how it does. Of course, it isn't a true hybrid like the Volt, but it's a start.
I have an old 1970 brochure for the Volkswagen Beetle. 57 HP, stick shift. Brags about getting 26 mpg on the highway.
The Tahoe is a full-sized SUV, with a 6 liter V8 engine (332 HP) and automatic. It gets and EPA 22 mpg on the highway, and a much more impressive 21 mpg in city driving, where hybrid tech really shines.
