If commenting on the extravagant fuel consumption of a vehicle during a time of fuel scarcity is a "snide observation(s) that carr(ies) obvious political baggage" then pray tell me WHAT would be acceptable to you? Total, intimidated silence?
The SUV is a value-free mechanical object with no political weight. The insistence that national policy must be adjusted to accomodate the SUV cuture, and all the other manifestations of energy-wasting consumer excess it symbolizes, IS politically loaded.
And blaming the liberals for your need to own one and your increasing difficulty in affording to operate it is simply astonishing. You owned a VW microbus, didn't you? There are acceptable alternatives possible with contemporary technology; some, as you point out, are already on the road.
