What Tom has been trying to explain is that this bailout and all other such government bailouts didn't exist before FDR and the notion that government was the safety net for everyone.
So few are historically literate enough today to even know who FDR was, much less precisely what he did to get us into the mess we are in today. FDR's minimum wage has sent 1/3 of our wages overseas and to Mexico. FDR prolonged the great depression, something savvy folks new at the time, but the unwashed masses believed he was a saint because he spoke to the masses and pointed fingers at the banks.
The free handout, the bail out, the safety net are popular with everyone who needs it. It spurs laziness, indolence and greed. This has been true whether it is the welfare mom putting child number 6 under her roof for more crack money or the greedy lenders who gorged on refinance fees when interest rates were low.
But again, it DIDN'T EXIST prior to FDR.
FDR is the source of all our current economic problems. Ike dismantled the price fixing of FDR, but left too much else of FDR's unconstitutional garbage legislation intact when he should have dismantled social security and the minimum wage as well. Had he done so, we would not be in this mess. We would not have seen the inflation we have seen over the past 60 years. We would still be living in the land of $20,000 homes and $2,000 cars and 25 cents would buy you a breakfast. One income would be able to buy a car, house and raise at least three kids.
That's the message. For today's activists, for whom ancient history is the Clinton era, pointing all this stuff out is like talking in Mandarin Chinese dialect - not a word sinks in or can even really be understood in the first place. Not only are the unable to gauge the accuracy of one's assertions the resent the notion that will have to spend time to educate themselves about the matter. The result is obvious all over these boards.

- Anyone still think unregulated capitalism is a viable financial system?

- We SHOULD have known when Bush said, "NO MORE BAILOUTS."
- Can't do any worse than the regulated system that created this mess.

- It's perfectly fine if one accepts that the strong make up their own rules, and are allowed to eat alive the weak. (n/t)

- Jimmy Carter was the problem. Not greed as McCain says. Former President Jimmy Carter.
- And I TOLD him at the time, I said "Jimmy, be careful!"
- Not Clinton, not Carter. It was Roosevelt. We were doing just fine under Hoover.

- He can't.
- Hilarious. Kinda reminds me of Bush Senior blaming the LA riots on Lyndon Johnson (who had been dead for 20 years) (n/t)
