More than Mr. Bush is, for sure.

After all, Franklin had Eleanor to give him a shove now and then.

You doubtless remember that other nations struck by the Depression, a world-wide phenomenon, also had trouble recovering. Some took even longer than the US. Also, the Dust Bowl, an environmental catastrophe, struck the middle of the country at the same time. What a surprise, with all the people dispossessed by the collapse of so much farmland, that recovery was delayed! Do remember, also, that the beginning of those seven long years was presided over by Hoover, who believed that and acted as if things would fix themselves. They didn't. Those little shantytowns that sprang up around the country were not called Rooseveltvilles.

Now to address your attempt at legerdemain:

We will never know the whole truth about Ashcroft, at least not right away, because the Patriot Act comes with a gag order, remember? The object is not to take books out of the libraries -- that's Palin's angle -- but to gather information about library users by harvesting their records without their knowledge, potentially without a warrant.

What that has to do with the Great Depression and the financial crisis now upon us, I have no idea, unless your object is to distract attention from the main point. This seems to be the main Republican plan at the moment: stir up culture wars so people will stop looking nervously at their wallets, their bank accounts, and their retirement portfolios. Good luck with that. Even in fairy tales, the wolf looks like and acts like a wolf, and everyone knows an ogre when they see one.
