We had fascist and populist demagogues with the ear of the people. And the people were actually, really suffering.

FDR did what was necessary to preserve social order and faith in a democratic form of government at the same time. We could have collapsed into chaos, or fallen prey to a dictator, but we didn't. Other nations of the time were not so fortunate.

Whether you agree with the New Deal or not, you may as well admit that, with the removal of the fiscal regulations that has been the goal of the Republicans since the 1930s, the moneyed classes and their servants in the banking and securities industries have not covered themselves with glory in the demonstration of their sense of responsibility toward the workers upon whose backs their wealth is balanced.
